Advising

Though graduate students are responsible for being familiar with the procedures and regulations of the program, we provide advising assistance. All graduate students must be familiar with the current version of the Sociology Graduate Student Handbook. All graduate students must communicate with the appropriate faculty advisor at the beginning and end of each semester to update their status in the program. The Graduate Faculty Advisor for on-campus students is Dr. Meredith Katz (makatz@vcu.edu) and for online students is Dr. Tara Stamm (tmstamm@vcu.edu). The Sociology Advisor, Rachel Bobbitt, who works with both undergraduate and graduate students, will also serve as an important source of administrative assistance (SOCYAdvising@vcu.edu). The current Graduate Program Director is Dr. Julie Honnold (jhonn@vcu.edu).  The signature or permission of the Director is required for a variety of actions, including for admission to candidacy, thesis defense completion, and courses taken outside the department. If a student is not sure how to proceed with any action in the graduate program, the appropriate faculty advisor should be consulted.
