Sociology Welcomes New Faculty Member - Tressie McMillan Cottom

Tressie McMillan Cottom studies race, class and gender inequality through education, work, and media. She arrives via Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her forthcoming book on the rapid expansion of for-profit colleges like The University of Phoenix documents the social inequalities in the high cost, low prestige for-profit college credential market. Tressie has published on academic capitalism; vulnerable populations and social media; and, sociology of higher education. Embracing the department’s mission of sociology without borders, she speaks and publishes widely. Her essays have been published in The New York Times, Slate Magazine, The Washington Post, The American Prospect, and Dissent Magazine. Speaking invitations include the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard, The American Federation of Teachers, and the University of Jena (Germany).
