VCU SOCY Club Collecting Children's Hats, Gloves and Small Animals for AFOI
November 9, 2022
VCU Sociology Club and the sociology department are excited to be partnering with Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the VCU Honors College to make affirmation cards and collect hats/gloves and small stuffed animals for the children of incarcerated parents in the Richmond area. As sociologists, we recognize and appreciate the importance of community partnerships such as this and we hope that you will join us in our efforts to support this amazing local organization. A drop-off box for children’s hats/gloves and small stuffed animals will be located in Founder’s Hall, 2nd floor, throughout the month of November. If you are able, please pick up something to help these deserving children who need our love and support. The Honors College will also be hosting a Bergland Seminar and event (see below) where we will hear from the organization and create affirmation cards for the children. Please join us in helping this incredibly worthwhile cause!
Event Details:
Date: November 15, 4:00-5:30 PM
Location: Honors College, Room 1303, 701 West Grace Street
Topic: Children of Incarcerated Parents
AFOI specializes in the needs of children with incarcerated parents by offering a support program at several Richmond public elementary schools and other trauma-informed services. Join representatives from AFOI, VCU Masters of Social Work students, and Dr. Jacqueline Smith-Mason (Honors College) in discussing how incarceration impacts the family structure, not just the incarcerated individual. Following the discussion, students will create inspirational cards (e.g., I can do it, Never give up). Also, winter hats and gloves and small stuffed animals are being collected and will need sorting.
